Content: The panel focuses on the historical and social context of gender imbalances in jazz and current initiatives and recommendations towards equal participation. It features the publication Jazz and Gender (Routledge, 2022), an edited volume of 40+ chapters authored by the world's leading researchers in the field. As gender identity becomes an increasingly important consideration in both education and scholarship, this compilation discusses issues related to masculinity, femininity, gender identity, sexuality, current scholarship and existing teaching tools, history, culturally responsive teaching, and advocacy.
Dr. Monika Herzig is Senior Lecturer at Indiana University and the author of “David Baker – A Legacy in Music” (IU Press), Experiencing Chick Corea: A Listener’s Companion (Rowman and Littlefield, 2017), and co-editor of Jazz and Gender (Routledge, 2022). She is also the chair of the research committee for the Jazz Education Network and editor of JAZZ (Jazz Education in Research and Practice, IU Press).
Dr. Laura Block has been project manager for the topic of gender equality in jazz for “Deutsche Jazz Union” since January 2019. In this function, the social scientist was responsible for the scientific post-evaluation of the “Jazzstudie 2016” under aspects of gender equality. She was also responsible for the resulting publication "GENDER.MACHT.MUSIK. Geschlechtergerechtigkeit im Jazz". In addition, she supports the board and the members in all other matters concerning gender equality and diversity.
